Not My Fault!!

Welcome to the Small Side Gallery, my space for posting small paintings designed especially for little places.

I’ve recently hooked up with a site called “Daily Paintworks”.  Daily Paintworks is a site where artists can post paintings for sale.  To see some of the little paintings I’ve posted there……. click here!  If in the process of visiting my new DPW gallery you discover something you like, you can purchase the piece through DPW (through Pay Pal) or you can contact me through this site directly. I’ve reduced all prices on my DPW for the Christmas season and the shipping is free.

(Don’t forget to check out the “Little Things” at the bottom of this post!)

Art history is cool. Most of it anyway. I liked learning about Monet  and Norman Rockwell. Nicolai Fechin was awesome, never did a poor painting in his life. OK I stretched that a little maybe but the point is all the old famous guys had lives that surpassed the norm. Even the new famous guys lead charmed lives. Or so it seems. If Monet were here he probably wouldn’t tell anyone anything he wasn’t totally proud of. And the further time takes us away from something the more distorted it becomes.

It doesn’t matter. I’m not hurt too much remembering things a little differently than they actually happened.  Scientific study (if I remember correctly) indicates we remember thing a little bit differently every time something from our past comes to mind. Do you suppose they can truly prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that my memory is faulty and I’ve naturally distorted the facts? Isn’t it nice to know, if it’s true, we don’t do it on purpose.

So….I assume since all my paintings are done from memory, (I have to look at what I wish to paint and then a short time later, from memory, I make a mark on my canvas) what you see above is to some extent the product of a distorted sense of reality. Not my fault!! Thanks scientific guys!! I feel so much better.

I’ve recently hooked up with a site called “Daily Paintworks”.  Daily Paintworks is a site where artists can post paintings for sale. The paintings are normally small and are some of the best quality around!!  To see some of the little paintings I’ve posted there……. click here!  If in the process of visiting my new DPW gallery you discover something you like, you can purchase the piece through DPW (through Pay Pal) or you can contact me through this site directly. “The Watcher”  oil 8×6 inches

This last July I met up with a group of plein air painters in Breckenridge, Colorado to paint wild flowers. This was a good year to be there  painting as the wild flowers were  abundant and of course the company I kept was awesome. This crow gave me time to snap two or three photographs before moving on.  I painted this in the studio a few weeks ago.

But the reason we were there was the wild flowers. I probably should have painted more of them and not let myself get so distracted by all the cool stuff around me. (I’m easy that way) I took a heck of a bunch of photos though and this picture of the Columbine is one of my favorites. It was late afternoon and conditions were perfect but changing pretty quickly. This photo was as good as I was going to get.

“Mid Winter Thaw” oil on panel

It’s one of the things I love about Colorado. One day it’s frozen over and the next we’ve got water running all over. When it’s warmer I don’t mind getting out to paint but the frozen over part gives me pause. Usually, with a small group of plein air friends, I go anyway.

This painting stems from a trip I made to Colorado Springs a couple of winters ago with a stop in the snow on the way back. It was a beautiful day that warmed way beyond what I could have asked for so I set up my easel and this 5×7 inch oil is the result. We’re supposed to have some snow tonight. It it snows maybe I’ll get out tomorrow and paint some of it.

Below is the “Little Thing” for today. Haikuish, sorta…

Wishing for Spring,

this little bit of water

will freeze tonight
